Deir el-Baramus Coptic Monastery, Wadi Natron, Egypt
. . . THIS MAY TAKE A MOMENT OR TWO . . .
The Coptic monastery of Deir el-Baramus (monastery of the Romans) was the cloister where St. Moses the Black resided in the fourth century. |
|
The monastery is located in the Wadi Natron (Valley of Natron), on the road leading northwest from Cairo to Alexandria (upper portion of the map at right)
Within the valley, the monastery of Deir el-Baramus is the northernmost, and until the completion of the road from Deir as-Suryani, was the most isolated.
This is the interior of the monastery, which has been rebuilt many times in its 1600+ year continuous life. At foreground is the round roofed church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
